Now please don’t get me wrong, I love a good burger, especially when it starts with “FIVE” and ends in “GUYS”. In fact, I like to get my American fix with a trip to FIVE GUYS once a week as my cheat meal of choice (cheat meal being a typically high calorie meal consumed to curb cravings and ignite your metabolism after several weeks of consistent healthy eating). Everything in moderation I say. However, the purpose of this blog is to purely highlight the difference in calorie and nutrient dense foods.
As you can see from my recent trip to “Five Guys” I indulged in a classic double beef burger, loaded with lettuce, onions, tomato, ketchup and mustard… oops, I almost forgot the pickles 😉 with a generous side of FIVE GUYS famous fries and a strawberry milkshake.
The total calories of my meal reached a staggering… 2,163 calories!!! That’s 13 calories more than my TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) calorie allowance with the goal of burning body fat and promoting lean muscle maintenance/growth.
Feel free to check out the FIVE GUYS nutritional chart here and do the calorie counting yourself; on that note, credit to FIVE GUYS for making the nutritional content of their food freely accessible and easy to navigate on their website. These figures are certainly enough to raise the alarm bells for me; however, I eat clean 99% of the time and on average burn in excess of 800 calories a day from exercise (weights and cardio) so my weekly trip to FIVE GUYS isn’t going to touch the sides.
That being said lets reign it in and come back to the purpose of this blog, you could eat 6 of my highly nutritious 8 WEEK WORKOUT meals, all 350 calories or less, packed with quality nutrient dense macronutrients (proteins, fats and carbohydrates) and it would still total 63 calories less than my one off trip to FIVE GUYS. I mean, the milkshake alone totalled a colossal 920 calories, of which 32g was fat (290 calories) and 94g of carbs, of which 92g were sugars!
Am I surprised that there is a global obesity epidemic? N0, but that doesn’t mean it is necessarily our fault and to be honest my finger points at the government and our school curriculum, in the UK at least; we fail to provide our youth, the future of tomorrow with potentially life changing education. I mean, do you know what a calorie is? How to calculate your TDEE? What is your BMR? These are all very simple questions if you know the answer, but more importantly vital for supporting mental and physical performance and ultimately a healthy body.
This one trip to FIVE GUYS took me over my TDEE calorie allowance, any excess food consumed would simply put me in a calorie surplus and lead to weight gain in the form of fat.
Here’s some food for thought, based on my weight being 74kg (163lbs.) I would burn approximately 1.27 calories per burpee; now I don’t know about you, but I hate burpees because they are brutal and the thought of having to do 1,703 (2,163 divided by 1.27) of them to burn off that meal makes me think twice about eating excessively on a regular basis.
I love a FIVE GUYS, but it’s hard to ignore that you could eat 6 calorie and nutrient dense meals that will fuel the most intense workouts and recovery, nourish your body, improve physical and mental performance, encourage fat loss and promote lean muscle maintenance/growth, then it does lead to the question, it it really worth it?
